roller skiers at Lancaster course by Alistair Brown

Roller Ski Instruction

Club Sessions

Starting in late autumn, and continuing through the winter and early spring, a series of Saturday morning tuition sessions are provided on the cycle circuit at UCLan Sports Arena in Preston (see Events page for details). You can attend as many or as few of these sessions as you like.

The sessions cater for beginners with no previous experience to aspirant loppet racers. For a small fee, all the necessary equipment can be provided for those who need it.

The aim of the programme is to be as flexible as possible and to cater for the needs of those who attend. The early sessions concentrate on skills work and, depending upon the wishes of those who attend and the progress made, later sessions may be spent exploring the track with coaching tips provided on the move.

Ideally by the end of the programme, all beginners would be of a level able to take part in the open track sessions at UCLan that are run over the late spring and summer (see Events page for details) or for a cross‑country holiday on snow. Those with some previous experience should be ready for anything: loppet racing, touring on snow, or the Northern Roll challenge which involves four one‑hour events organised once a month in May‑August at venues in the North West and North East of England.

Open track sessions for roller skiers with their own equipment are also held for several weeks in late autumn/winter at the Tameside Cycle Track in Ashton‑under‑Lyne (see Events page for details) to help skiers prepare for forthcoming winter holidays on snow.

These are intended to become a regular feature, subject to demand, and may be moved to later in the year to different venues such as Venabu, Norway, depending on snow conditions, and even to be timed to fit in with a local loppet race. Watch this space for more details in coming years.

Telemark Coaching On-Snow

Club Sessions

Club Meets take place at Chill Factore during the Sunday 12‑2pm slot. These generally occur every 2 or 3 weeks (see Events page for dates).

Telemarkers can practice on the main slope (lift pass required). Club Telemark coaches usually attend and are available for coaching and support. Telemark equipment including skis, poles plus a limited number of Telemark boots are available from Chill Factore included with the lift pass (to purchase).

All skiers are required by Chill Factore to wear gloves and long sleeves when on the slopes. Helmets must be worn, also available free of charge with the lift pass.

Introduction to Telemark sessions are also run - please email telemark@mccsc.org.uk before coming. Participants must have Alpine ski experience and be able to make turns and control speed from the top of the main slope.
